YOU LIKE MUSIC?
Lite: Do you like music? Mmmmm, then in that case you're gonna love this. I was into these dudes before anybody. Partied with them all the time. Asked me to be their manager. I called bullshit on that. Managing a pop group - dig - no job for no man.
One of PORK magazine's stated goals has been to bring the disparate tribes of Rock&Roll back together under one tent. This is so we can have the numbers we need to really summon back the MONSTERS OF ROCK. As Rock&Roll has aged & different people have come to it & left it behind - it has taken on many shapes & forms. As far as we're concerned - you gotta know what's good & that's it. But good Rock&Roll isn't a genre - it's what each band brings to the music. It's a total package. The Sound. The Look. The Attitude.
BILLY IDOL - EYES WITHOUT A FACE
Billy Idol was an original Bromley Contingent Punk Rocker coming up with Siouxsie Sioux & Sid Vicious & became the face of the Acme Attractions model of the Sex Pistols - "Chelsea" which quickly turned into his own band - Generation X. As Punk cracked open the music world Billy Idol took his place as a Punk Crooner - Elvis obsessed & more Rock&Roll than anyone around at the time but producing this smoothed out New Wave Gangster Rock.
THE CULT - FIRE WOMAN
The Cult started out as the Southern Death Cult - a quintessential Gothic Rock group that played with groups like Theater of Hate & Bauhaus in the early 80s. Singer Ian Astbury & Theater of Hate guitarist Billy Duffy quit their respective bands to create the Death Cult which was later shortened to the Cult. The Cult took the atmosphere & romance of Gothic Rock via the Doors - but welded it onto the biggest 80s Rock&Roll sound they could summon.
AC/DC - TNT
Australia's AC/DC are so big in the world of Rock&Roll - some people can only see them for how big they are & can't hear that they are listening to what has to be accepted as Punk Rock - especially from Hilly Krystal's definition of Punk as "Street Rock". Stripped down, aggressive, funny, loud & nasty - AC/DC are what the Ramones could have been. I have a test when I'm DJing - it's the AC/DC test - if I play TNT or Dirty Deeds & people aren't head banging they don't have a soul.
DARKTHRONE - THOSE TREASURES WILL NEVER BEFALL YOU
Darkthrone are a Norwegian Death Metal band who were one of the first to go full Black Metal - inspired by Celtic Frost & Bathory & ended up leading the Black Metal scene. Darkthrone did us all a favor - instead of resting on their Black Metal laurels & gigging endlessly on Transilvanian Hunger or following the progressive narrative of extreme music into some unlistenably elaborate bullshit like most of their contemporaries - Darkthrone went Roots & brought back the sounds that made Black Metal what it was in the first place. The closest analogy is Motörhead - & they embody the Metal Punk mentality as much as anyone out there - but Darkthrone is really best understood by listening.
THIN LIZZY - EMERALD
Thin Lizzy got alienated from their total Rock&Roll Strength by their big hit, "The Boys Are Back In Town" - a swinging Power-Pop Song that is almost TOO well written. As soon as you start digging into their catalog - you discover that Thin Lizzy taught Iron Maiden everything they know & they have more in common with Judas Priest than Cheap Trick.
KISS - STRUTTER
KISS, like AC/DC have become overshadowed by themselves - making all of the cave creatures that are just plain intimidated by big, loud, successful things on guard & reaching for their spears immediately. When the 80s were trying to make way for the new - KISS & other 70s Rock&Roll acts were dismissed as dinosaurs - lumbering beasts from the sandy pits of prehistory - which they are - but the thing is - this isn't a problem! Ask yourself this - would you rather ride a dinosaur or an 80s Honda scooter? Your answer will determine whether or not you'll like KISS.
